Who is Macmillan Science and Education?

Macmillan Science and Education is a leading global science and education publishing group based in London with offices in 50 markets. It provides high-quality journals, magazines, books, databases and digital workflow tools, including flagship publications Nature and Scientific American, to customers in 120 countries.

The challenge.

The rollout of the global Oracle ERP Financials solution into America (New York) after initial deployment in the UK has not been successful.

  • Although the system is live, there are many open critical issues creating integrity, reporting and useability issues.
  • The end-user community is stressed. Instead of saving time by standardising and automating processes, the new system has significantly increased workload and slowed operations.
  • Senior management wishes to continue the ERP rollout into APAC (Tokyo) as soon as possible to address critical business issues.
  • Before proceeding, they must first address the problems in the US and UK and avoid issues with future deployments.

The solution.

  • Fantail has more than 20 years of experience implementing ERP software and managing global ERP rollouts.
  • Macmillan hired Fantail to provide an independent expert review of the ERP rollout into America and perform a lessons-learned analysis to avoid the same issues with future implementations.
  • Fantail introduced a structured methodology for expertly evaluating the rollout approach used for deploying the solution into the US.
  • Confidentially interviewed all critical project stakeholders, including senior management, implementation partners, project leaders and end-users in the UK and US.
  • Evaluated each component of the rollout (e.g. governance, scope, resourcing, risk, training, data migration, testing, support, etc.), preparing a report of critical findings, the impact of each on the rollout, and resultant lessons learned.

The result.

Rapidly addressed critical shortcomings and completed the US deployment successfully within a short few months.

Significantly improved end-user satisfaction in the UK and US.

Developed a best-practice blueprint for global rollouts. Incorporated into Macmillan’s foundation PMO policy for governing future business software implementations.

Completed the global ERP rollout into Japan successfully using the blueprint methodology.
